hi all

I wish to announce the imminent start up of Sundials Atlas
www.sundialsatlas.eu (SA), a new public, international and multilingual
site, for the cataloging of sundials.

With SA is possible to post the location of a sundial on a satellite map,
describe location and access, enter comments, enter a gnomonic description
by selecting preset labels, attach documents, enter the motto, search
sundials with complex queries, create public or personal paths with a
selection of sundials (a valley, a city, an author, a gnomonic feature, the
preferred sundials, etc.) and, not the last, enter photos.

Everyone can post info or photos. In this way, each sundial may show
contributions from more users. Every contribution shows the authorship and
the photos can also be protected with a watermark.

There are a lot of details you can enter, read or search via SA, the best
thing is to view it. The site will be opened April 25th during Il Tempo
Silenzioso, a gnomonic showcase in Milan on april 24th and 25th. Now the
site is under test and its access is password protected. The page with the
pw will be removed on april 25th but if someone wants to start testing it
now I will be happy to post the pw and to receive suggestions and opinions.

Sundials Atlas is not my website or the website of a sundials society
because it declares to be impartial and international: everyone can enter
details and photos and every info posted becomes universal heritage, as
happening on Wikipedia, Flickr or YouTube. The Atlas was created to provide
a tool for cataloging and consulting for all gnomonics people: universal,
public, respectuful of the privacy (it is not a social network) and of the
data authorship.

This idea was born watching the huge quantities of sundials of the national
censuses. The problem is that they are closed into a drawer, or are on
paper, or fragmented in personal web-sites or, even, they are simple photos
on Flickr without a gnomonic identity. Some gnomonics societies have a good
site with their national census, complete or partial, but the gnomonics
comunity has not a strument really sacred to store and to organize the whole
gnomonics heritage, available for any search on the matter.

Sundials Atlas will have a committe to manage the site and verify the posted
info and photos, anyone may take part of the committe and I started to
inform the responsables of the sundials societies for this rule.

For the testing period you can get the pw from me
[email protected] or from Fabio Garnero [email protected].

SA is now in english, french and italian and it is structured to add other
languages.

ciao fabio
