Hello All,

I also have a representation of many of the Spectra sundials I have made
over the years on my web site. You can see the World of Artisan Sundials
here:

http://www.artisanindustrials.com/world-of-sundials/artisan-sundials-world.h
tml

The page requires a small Google Earth plug-in to be installed, if you don't
have it on your system already. Google Earth turned out to be a better
solution for my purpose since I wanted to show how the sun never sets on the
Spectra sundial - the terminator shadow on the globe is keyed to your system
clock and shows where the sun is in real time, so you can see which
locations are light and which ones are dark. There is always a Spectra
sundial in the light of day somewhere.

This Google Earth map also has a unique twist. I designed a special icon to
use for each location that indicates at a glance the declination of each
dial...so you can further insight by being able to see which direction all
these small custom vertical sundials are facing. Zoom in and click on any
location to see more about the dial - sometimes the actual artwork layout is
provided, sometimes a link to a photograph in the Spectra sundial gallery at
http://www.artisanindustrials.com/spectra-sundial-gallery.html or when
available, a link to more information about the dials that may appear
elsewhere online.

It must also be noted that all the dial locations shown have been moved from
the actual homes of my customers to the city center of the place where they
live to protect their privacy. Some locations have been omitted all together
at the request of some privacy loving or high profile Spectra owners.

It is a big undertaking to put something like this online, and I must admit
that I have a lot of updating to do and new sundial locations to add, but I
think it is a really interesting thing to see sundials on the rotating
planet in a graphical form...and with most of the associated sundial layouts
available only a click away, it becomes quite educational as well. I hope
this serves as a good example of what can be done, and I also hope any of
you who decide to have a look enjoy the tour!

Best,

Jim Tallman

Subject: Sundials on Google Maps

I have created a number of sundial maps using Google Maps. Sundial
placemarks are shown on the Google Map and on a list at the side. Click on
any of the placemarks to see a picture and a short description. Links are
included to better pictures and more detailed descriptions. Links to
specific maps have been posted on this list from time to time so others can
use this information.

Like many other Google Map users I have been frustrated when the links to
the maps stopped working. The link would bring up the map but not the
placemarks. Google maps say they are working on the problem but have not yet
solved it. Users have offered workarounds that seem to work. The best advice
is to click the back arrow button in the top right on the page. Remarkably,
this button is live and clicking it brings up the placemarks.

Here are several links to test.

Woody Sullivan introduced me to the use of Google Maps for sundials. Thanks
Woody. I note that his Google maps show the same problem but clicking the
back button seems to work there as well. Here is a link to one of his.

I am using Google's short links. These take you to the long ones but are
easier to type in and use. I also have Google Earth kmz files for all these
sundials. The placemark appearance and 3D maps are better. Perhaps I will
post a few here as the kmz files are quite small.

I would appreciate feedback to confirm the problem and solution.
