hi John,

you are right. For example the southernmost point of France is 21° 23' 23'' S.
Yes South. Because Réunion is France.
There are many other similar examples, they are all correct like your example
for Australia.
Australia is not the only country to put at the South Pole its southernmost
point (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Territorial_claims_of_Antarctica). The
southernmost point of Norway is the Peter I isle, 68° 50' S.

I'm collecting the extreme coordinates of the mainlands, in the common sense of
this expression; then I'll collect the extreme coordinates of the
geographically separate territories so the software can check if the
coordinates of a sundial card are congruous with the address.

In the Sundial Atlas database I have the lists of the countries (240), of the
first geographic suddivisions (1183, like states in USA, regions in Italy,
lands in Germany and so on) and of the second geographic suddivisions (6580,
like counties in USA, provinces in Italy, districts in Germany and so on).
In my lists, Australia has 'Australian Antarctic Territory' too. But there
aren't registered sundials too :-)

ciao Fabio

  Good morning Fabio,

Here is the official geographic view of Australia's dimensions ...

http://www.ga.gov.au/education/geoscience-basics/dimensions/continental-extremities.html

Any reasonable person would assume that when you ask for the extreme points
of Australia, that you mean the "corners" of the continent itself as listed in
the URL. But being an (unreasonable ?) pedant, and one who has worked in
Antarctica several times, I would gently point out that the southern-most point
of Australia (as a nation) is actually the South Pole. The Australian Antarctic
Territory is legally part of Australia, and this ends at the South Pole.

I have won several bets with this on the simple question "What is the
southern-most point of Australia?"

  Cheers, John
