Following on from recent
correspondence begun by Martina Addiscott and contributions by others
I've decided to produce a universal version of my educational Multi-dial
which will function correctly at any latitude from 50° N (The Lizard in
Cornwall) to the Shetland Islands. Other models might follow for lower
latitudes/countries depending on its reception by UK teachers.
Unlike its experimental predecessor with its laminated paper scales this
version, complete with the main declination lines on the vertical face,
will be commercially screen-printed in white on MDF. All except final
assembly will be sub-contracted to local companies so quantity
production at a modest cost should be easily possible. A built-in
magnetic compass and a 'bullseye' spirit level will complete the
hardware with a leaflet containing the necessary basic information for
teachers. One prototype is currently in production for first assessment.
Yes, I know I'm supposed to be 'retired' but, now that the initial
design work is done, there will be little direct activity for me and
what there is will be passed on to others asap.
