have a look at

and search for dial 8 and dial 50. Both are dials
on a windows without a proper gnomon or style. In
the description of dial 50 are links to the
articles describing the construction.

It is a double insulated window so I dont want
to attach anything directly to the window. If I
did attach to the window, it might cause the
vacuum to break. Even if it didnt, it could
void the warranty. I had considered doing a
real stained glass piece and hang it inside the
window but that is just more space to leave open before the style appears.
That was why I was thinking a floating style. I
planned to use a Polar Axis (triangle) style.
Basically, it would be the same thing as one
attached to the surface but with the bottom
chopped off. Imagine you took the triangle and
drilled a couple of holes in it 2 inches up, ran
poles through them, then cut off the part below
the poles. That is what I am thinking of doing.
That leaves the tip of the style in the same
point in space, it just leaves an open space
between the bottom of the triangle and the window.
I will probably extend the tip of the style
beyond the end of the triangle, just so it is
easier to read in summer, but, it will still be, basically, a polar style.

Will your stained glass sundial design require a
polar axis style (a triangular sheet or angled
rod) or a point-in-space style (also called a nodus)?
What cant you attach the style to the window
glass? There are several ways to do this.

Subject: mock stained glass sundial
Ok, so I have the insulated windows but I want a
stained glass sundial. So, I plan to paint a
sundial on the window frame using glass
paint. The only problem is, I cannot actually mount the style to the window.
So, I want to back check with you guys. what I
am thinking about doing is, paint the dial as
planned. Then, Ill make a paper style and use
that to check my distance. I can mount two bars
across the window 2-3 inches away from the
window. I can attach the actual style to the
bars. So, I can use the paper style to adjust
the amount of material I need to leave off the
bottom of the style to have the correct shadow.
In effect, I am creating a floating style. What
do you guys think. I wanted to check with folks
who have done real stained glass and see if you
think the floating style will work.
