Don't discount the educational value of Google doodles. Someone who
had never heard of Euler might be tempted to click on the weird doddle
to find out what it was about. Just like all those teeny-boppers (do
they still call them that?) who possibly learned about Anne Frank
today for the first time.
Here's what I posted to CANSPACE about the doodle:

Quoting Roger Bailey <[email protected]>:
Hi Jack,
I am with you, cute but so what. I appreciate Google noting Euler's
306th birthday but again so what. I use to appreciate Google and
their "do no evil" philosophy. This is cute but no longer respected
in the monetization of searches, links and privacy. Things were
better in the old days.
"O God! methinks it were a happy life
To be no better than a homely swain;
To sit upon a hill, as I do now,
To carve out dials quaintly, point by point,
Thereby to see the minutes how they run,
How many make the hour full complete;
How many hours bring about the day;
How many days will finish up the year;
How many years a mortal man may live."
Shakespeare, Henry VI contemplating battle.
Regards Roger Bailey

But why his 306th birthday? What is the significance of 306? Am I missing
something obvious?

I should, of course, have added:
Happy Birthday to Leonhard Euler
306 years old today and still going
strong!
It is a happy coincidence that he
should have been born on the day
that the Equation of Time changes
sign.
