Yes, the "Mercator" projection distorts areas in such a way that
the Northerly locations are given a much greater 'prominence'.
If you want a map with orthogonal Latitude and Longitude lines,
plus which keeps land AREAS in 'real' proportions - have you
considered using a map which has the "Peters Projection"?
