Hi Fred,

So she does – I found it, page 12 of the 4th edition. Thank you so much.
‘Pope Sabianus, who succeeded Gregory the Great in AD 606, is said to have
ordered dials and clocks (clepsydrae) to be placed on churches so as to
distinguish the time of day.’
I wonder if there is any more documented evidence of the decree.
I guess from the date it could have been a spur to the creation of Saxon dials,
the tradition of marking times lingering on in scratch dials long after the
Saxon skills had been lost.

Kind regards,

John

John,

Mrs. Gatty claims this was a decree of Pope Sabinian, 606 AD. Away from home,
so I can't give you a page reference.

I have heard that there was once a Papal Encyclical requiring all churches to
have a Mass Dial. Is there any truth in this, and if so do we have a reference
to it?
