Thank you so much. ‘Pope Sabianus, who succeeded Gregory the Great in AD 606, is said to have ordered dials and clocks (clepsydrae) to be placed on churches so as to distinguish the time of day.’ I wonder if there is any more documented evidence of the decree. I guess from the date it could have been a spur to the creation of Saxon dials, the tradition of marking times lingering on in scratch dials long after the Saxon skills had been lost.
