Strange way of marking the roman "X" and its possible added volute!No Reinhold
and Luis, the volute are original. Look at the tird image of the article you
linked in your email (the volutes are visible also in other photos) that is the
photo before restoration. Go also to see the old photo numbered NK 12 in the
article, you can see the volutes also there. The restorers made a very good
work.

I agree with you! The restorer obviously has added these lines on the very last
day of her restoration work. I did not see these traces in the stone before,
even I had often been alone on the scaffold and very close to the sundial and
also taken so many photos at all light-situations. The restorer should have
better taken more care for the hour-lines for example! ...
