Dear all,
excellent exampe of a restauration! Well done!
Though not having been on the scaffolding myself I found it very
interesting to look at the pictures of the original dial and believe that
there are signs of a valute (?) at least at two of the "X" marks.
My question then would be: Why should the restorers have added these
valutes without an original trace of them? May be they can be asked and
more can be found out. If so it would be very interesting wether such
valutes have a history or meaning and which. I have never seen similar
signs in such a form or position connected to dial indicators. It might
turn out that you are tracing an interesting feature.
Could you let me know if you get new results, please.
Kind Regards
Siegfried Netzband

Dear Luis,

I agree with you! The restorer obviously has added these lines on the very
last day of her restoration work. I did not see these traces in the stone
before, even I had often been alone on the scaffold and very close to the
sundial and also taken so many photos at all light-situations. The restorer
should have better taken more care for the hour-lines for example! ...

Kind regards, Reinhold

Congratulations Reinhold for the project and its final result.
Strange way of marking the roman "X" and its possible added volute!

Dear friends!

I am very happy to inform you that the 533 years old sundial
of St. Nicolai in Zerbst was successfully restored because of my
recommendation!
Martin Luther has already looked up to this sundial, when he was preaching
in the big church.
A private money donation of a citizen of Zerbst to the "Förderkreis St.
Nicolai Zerbst e.V." has made it possible!

I have compiled a rich documentation of this restoration work within my
link
