I struggled withthe math in the early 1980’s till I read Noel C Ta’Boise’s 1986 instruction articles using the scientificcalculator in Clocks magazine from the UK. This is why I like promoting math and science and NASS with myeducational sundial displays since 2004: “Learn about a fascinating hobbyand with a little math, design and make your own sundial”. I was so frustrated with the math inthe early 1980’s that gave out a paper at the 2nd Annual Conferencemeeting of NASS in 1996 Toronto, Canada: SUNDIALS WILL NEVER REALLY BE POPULAR TILL THE MATH IMPROVES! I explained that sundial will never reallybecome popular till the math is explained better in books and articles writtenon sundials. File attached. I am working on anew Time to Reflect sundial for the Elizabethtown Historical Society that has anunbreakable mirror that was patented by W.W. Wilson in 1859 to watch thedirections of the clouds going by. Hopefully, this sundial will be used to reflect on our past.
