Dear friends, a new issue of the Italian magazine Orologi Solari is available for download from the usual site http://www.orologisolari.eu/.
Here is the list of articles together with a short abstract: 1. - "An equatorial mirror-sundial" by Francesco Baggio The creation of a particular equatorial mirror-sundial is described. The time is indicated by the cusp of the figure generated by the envelope of the sun's rays reflected inside a cylindrical mirror, very similar to a cardioid. This geometric figure is used to celebrate the inventor of the electrocardiogram. 2. - "Double-mirror with 45° dihedral angle for Gorizia: horizontal sundial on vertical wall" by Francesco Ferro Milone Since the double reflection sundial is not immediately understandable, a real case can be helpful to make it known, showing that such sundials are not overly complicated and allow for singular applications. The peculiarity is to have represented the geographical “gnomonic projection” centered on Gorizia. 3. - "The Verrès Moon Dial" by Andrea Macco The recent discovery of three sundials, one of which is a 17th century lunar one, inside the Provostry-Collegiate Church of Saint-Gilles of Verrès, in Valle d’Aosta, is reported. 4. - "The gnomonic cube of Sixtus V of the Paris Observatory" by Denis Savoie The Paris Observatory has in its rich collection several sundials made by a young and talented Italian gnomonist, Teodosio Rossi. In particular, he made, in 1587 for Pope Sixtus V, a magnificent cube: a detailed description is presented here. 5. - "A gnomonic work to toast" by Nicola Ulivieri The author describes the design and method of making a sundial on a polar cylindrical surface. The work, installed in a private garden in the municipality of Murlo (SI), was designed in the shape of a bottle and positioned near a vineyard of the client. In addition to symbolizing the Tuscan winemaking tradition and providing gnomonic indications, the sundial also indicates the time for an afternoon toast or a moment of convivial meditation. 6. - "Contemporary languages to rediscover sundials" by Ennia Visentin Sundials have lost their original function with the advent of mechanical clocks, first, and electronic systems, later. Thus, students from two schools in the municipality of Maniago (Pordenone) have taken up the challenge of using contemporary tools and languages to rediscover sundials, their original function and to give a new meaning to their presence in the current landscape. In this way, a multimedia tourist route is born that accompanies us in the discovery of the territory through its artistic, historical, landscape aspects… 7. "Third book of the ASTROLABIUM by Christopher Clavius - 1593 edition" by Alessandro Gunella (Short contribution) The author shares his translation of the third book about the ASTROLABIUM by Christopher Clavius, after having here presented a summary of the essential parts of the entire work, the first and the second book in Orologi Solari n. 32, n. 33 and n. 34. Hope you will enjoy the reading, although in Italian only. Regards. Gian
