Sounds like this unit has been treated unkindly.  I've seen the reader
frame popped open like that when someone has forced a foreign object into
the reader slot, never in normal use.

I agree, this seems to be a damaged unit.

There's a microswitch at the back of the reader that tells the unit when
a card is present.  If that switch is damaged or gunked up then the reader
might not even realise that a card is present and firmware won't try to
interact with it.  This could explain the sensitivity.

The reader isn't supposed to be this sensitive, I think it's broken.  If
you got this one from Sun then you should be able to get it exchanged
under warranty, as long as you don't tell them you opened it up.  If you're
just experimenting then you can often find a few units on Ebay, that's
usually much cheaper than buying a brand new unit.
