Which button are your users pressing?  The one labelled "Auto" will
produce a dialogue that says "Not Available".

The button labelled "Menu" should offer a whole range of setup 
choices.  The up/down arrows on their own (when the Menu is not 
active) should adjust the brightness directly.  If these buttons 
don't work then that's a very serious bug.

'utsettings' won't help, it can't adjust brightness or contrast.
If the unit is loaded with 3.0-patch or 3.1 firmware then
'utsettings' should let you choose different on-screen resolutions.
If it won't let you change resolutions that's a clue that these
units contain 3.0 RR/GA or factory-default firmware.
