Hello,
I thought I should close off this thread appropriately and report that I
have resolved the issue by following the suggestions in this post:
http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg00800.html
Instead of removing the libesd-alsa0 package which would have removed
the bulk of the ubuntu packages, I issued an 'apt-get install libesd0'
instead, which
did remove both the libesd-alsa0 and ubuntu-desktop packages. However,
I have later discovered that the ubuntu-desktop package is only a meta
package
and it's removal as a result of installing libesd0 has no bearing on the
system.
In short, I got the sound to work!
