Jimmy,
I have had similar issues with mapping keys for a terminal-based system.
My workaround was to map the keys using xmodmap. The following is an
excerpt from /etc/X11/gdm/SunRayInit/Default which is used to map the
keys for all users:
/usr/bin/xmodmap -e "keycode 91 = slash" \
-e "keycode 92 = asterisk" \
-e "keycode 93 = minus" \
-e "keycode 94 = plus" \
-e "keycode 95 = Return"
These keycodes were obtained by running 'xev'. Please note that this
setup is for Ubuntu (linux), however a similar solution should work for
other OSes.
