The capacitor problem (if it's the same one I'm remembering), is easy to
fix, and there's not really a need to avoid getting these. Actually,
it's an incentive to pick up some "broken" ones.

The problem I remember is that there are some large electrolytic caps
next to some heat sinks on the power supply board. As there is no fan in
the chassis, these caps can tend to get a little "cooked".

If the cap has failed, the SunRay won't power on (the LED might be lit
amber, I don't remember). If you open it up, you'll notice one of the
large caps with a bulge on the top (if not broken open). The capacitor
is supposed to be cylindrical with a flat top.

In order to fix it, you'll need to unsolder the cap and replace it with
one rated for a higher temperature. Typically, commercial components
might be rated for 0-70C. You'll want to replace them with something
rated up to 85C. I picked up some of those cheap here in Sunnyvale at
Halted to fix a couple of broken units myself.

So if you are handy with a soldering iron, there's no need for you to
avoid these early models.

Hope this helps.

Dave
