ldapclient really expects that you're using sun directory server, if
you're hitting openldap it can be painful. check out gary tay's page,
http://web.singnet.com.sg/~garyttt/, it contains a ton a really good
information on getting solaris to authenticate againsts various ldap
servers using native tools and not the padl nssldap and pamldap modules.
