Would you be happy with an answer like that?
Yes, much happier than I am now :). Folks would quit yelling at me
for choosing Solaris/x86 for our pricey new Sun Ray server when it
can't run Matlab, Maple, and a bunch of other things that run on
Linux/x86.
PDF viewing is so ubiquitous a need I don't want to see it solved
in this manner. It should be trivial for Adobe to recompile on an
x86 platform and release it, they only need the motivation.
I suspect its fantasy to think we'll see acroread, maple, and matlab
on Solaris/86 anytime soon. A production Containers-for-Linux would
help us, definitely.
I don't disagree. Not all vendors will get on board, at least
initially. My only point really is about PDF viewers. With all
due respect I think a PDF viewer is used significantly more
broadly then either maple or matlab. For something that
is so broadly required I want a native solution, ASAP. More
is always better of course, but this discussion started with
@Home type solutions. In such environments a PDF viewer
is a very basic requirement. I for one have never used maple
or matlab at home.
Since JohnnyL went to Adobe, I'm hoping he'll apply some
inside pressure to the situation, or his old golf buddies
will, but *that* may well be a fantasy :-). Probably not his
#1 priority.
