Sorry, I know this is waaay off topic, but I can't hold back anymore :)
Why is KDE not an option? We use it here with SunRays, and while taste
might vary, these are my observations:
1) The whole desktop environment experience is, the way I see it, miles
ahead of JDE/Gnome - the konqueror ("explorer") integration with the
rest of the desktop is fabulous, and I could go on and on about all
the little details that make KDE a very polished desktop the way that
I see it. Heck, even my mom switched from Windows to KDE because of
the desktop.
2) Seeing the discussion about the lack of a proper PDF reader... Well,
kpdf supports hyperlinks (if that's what's missing from the other
non-Acroread readers) - I can't think of a reason why I'd want
acroread. With the desktop "native" reader (kpdf) I have the same
printing dialoges etc. etc. as I have in every other KDE application.
Sure, not everyone here's on the KDE wagon (yet). I have people using
fluxbox with firefox and konqueror, or twm with galeon/mozilla - and for
that matter, we all use emacs, but I have yet to see someone prefer JDS
over the alternatives :)
I do *not* intend to start a Gnome vs. KDE flamefest here - my intention
was to lead your attention towards what seems to me like an overlooked
alternative - and for me to get an answer to the "why oh why" that's
ringing in my head right now :)
So "why oh why" dear list members? ;)
