The main differents is that the Sun ray is not limited by software.
All other thin clients are.
If rpd versions go from 5.0 to 5.1 to 5.2 and in the future to 6.0 you don't have to upgrade the Sunray. The Wyse terminals do need to be upgraded if you want to use the new features from a Wyse terminal. The rdp clients in a sunray setup are upgraded centraly on the servers. This is a major adminstration relief by design. Wyse makes managment tools to manage the client side upgrade problem they have.
These tools are more expensive than the terminal itself.
In my humble opinion this is a strange but lucrative way of patching a design flaw.

At some stage it might be needed to upgrade the OS on a Wyse terminal.
At least Wyse has manuals on how to do this so I guess that is something they want customers to do.
Before upgrading the OS you need to check for the hardware requirements
So what happens if you don't meet the requirements? Right you have to buy new thin client hardware.

So the bottom line is that software development is forcing client upgrades on thin clients and ultimately forcing hardware upgrades. Not so with Sunrays. Sunrays don't run software and OS so you are never forced to upgrade them.

So when would I use a Wyse /thin client terminal?
Well only if:
1. I know for sure that I don't need to upgrade any software on it for the next 10 years.
2. I only need minimal numbers of clients < 5.
3. I need some special hardware connected to it that only works with a local OS installed on the thin client.
But otherwyse I would choose for a Sunray.

I'm looking at the Windows thin client market and wondering what is the best choice of a thin terminal architecture? -Sunray
- Wyse
- SmartFlex LTSP?
- Web base access
The primary application would be access to MS office and Outlook/
Exchange. (Please don't try to talkup JDS etc. It's out of scope for now).
Does Sun have a marketing position on this?
Thanks
