Thanks to all the respondents on this subject. 

After researching the responses and trying to make it work the way I
wanted to, I discovered that all I needed to do to accomplish what I
wanted was to drag the top folder of the directory structure I created
with all the .desktop files in it to the panel and a drawer was
magically created to do what I want.  This obviously didn't create it in
the Launch menu, but creating a .directory file in the top level with
the company logo as the folder icon now puts the company logo on the
panel bar with the localized application/menu tree.

Now if I could figure out how to make that happen via a script, I'd be
all set.  I'll go ask on the Gnome Open Solaris list now that I know it
exists.
