I agree overall with what you say. On the other hand, as a Solaris SRSS customer I cannot help but ask -- will the Linux version always be behind in features? Will some features never be ported?
The plan is to bring the Linux feature set up to parity with Solaris. I can't think of any SRSS feature that we intend to keep as Solaris-only; any long-term disparities will be fallout from differences between the underlying Solaris and Linux platforms. So, for instance, running libusb apps on Sun Ray on Linux will remain a little bumpy until libusb on Linux provides some mechanism that allows the Sun Ray libusb implementation to work automatically (as the Solaris port of libusb already does). The two big things that are still missing from the Linux port are NSCM and CAM. NSCM didn't get into 3.1.1 because we just didn't have the manpower to fit it into the schedule alongside everything else. Technically it shouldn't be very difficult but it does depend on cooperation from the display manager. CAM is much more difficult because the Solaris implementation is built on top of CDE, but work is underway on a new version of CAM that should run on both Solaris and Linux. I can think of three or four other smaller features that are missing from the Linux port. They'll also get caught up eventually but if no-one asks for them then that catch-up will be a low priority activity. We have no shortage of feature requests, and something that satisifes a customer request will always get prioritised ahead of something that, as far we know, no-one specifically wants.
I think SUN could benefit from attaining feature parity. Of course, SUN could have benefited from marketing the Sun Rays much better a few years ago too.
Marketing? Don't get me started.
Anyway, it sounds like I should file an RFE for NSCM for the Linux SRSS.
That would be helpful. OttoM. __ ottomeister Disclaimer: These are my opinions. I do not speak for my employer. _______________________________________________ SunRay-Users mailing list [email protected] http://www.filibeto.org/mailman/listinfo/sunray-users
