I'm working on a pilot rollout of SunRays.
We have two datacenters, each one has four SunRay servers - two Solaris
and two Linux (8 servers total). I plan to have a failover group
defined between the two like servers at each datacenter, and regional
hotdesking between the two datacenters. The datacenters are physically
remote from where the SunRay devices are to be deployed and used, so I
have DHCP helpers configured on the appropriate switches. The SunRay
servers will be providing all DHCP info to the SunRays. The SunRays are
sitting on a dedicated VLAN, but the servers are on a shared VLAN.
This is not an unusual configuration.
My question is this - has anyone done a deployment like this, and if so,
how can I point the devices at a particular server? Hotdesk sessions
can't move between Linux and Solaris (right?), which leads me to this
issue.
The first question is: Is it really the "devices"
(Sun Rays) that you want directed at particular
server groups? Or is the "binding" really to the
user?
In other words, can users use any Sun Ray? Or are
the Sun Rays physically partitioned so that some
Sun Rays should always go to Linux, while others
always go to Solaris (this will restrict your
flexibility, but maybe that's a goal for you :-)?
Secondly, are your users going to use
Solaris/Linux directly? Or are they going
directly to a full-screen Windows environment, and
never log into Solaris/Linux (i.e. "CAM mode")?
If it's the devices, rather than the users, you
have two choices. You can either do it at the
DHCP level itself, or you can use AMGH.
If it's the users, you should use AMGH. If you're
using CAM and single-user smartcards, you should
use the PAM client I put in my blog for CAM/AMGH
(http://blogs.sun.com/bobd), but there is no
officially *supported* way to do this.
Why don't you answer the questions above, and we
can focus on your specific requirements in our
responses.
