The latency is approximately 800ms (this is the rtt) which is typical of
satellite links.
Like I said, viewing photoalbums or streaming seems to be okay but
working on a document (this is via terminal server) is very slow.  It is
workable I guess and one could get used to it but it's still quite
annoying.  I was hoping there was some parameter somewhere I could set
to enable characters to be locally echoed when typing.

What's the latency of that link.  You might get better response using 
CDE over Gnome.
