Like I said, viewing photoalbums or streaming seems to be okay but
working on a document (this is via terminal server) is very slow. It is

Yes, this is a very bad latency. There's no way to enable local character
echo, since the client has no idea where the keyboard focus is going
or how the application receiving the keyboard input wants to handle
it. It would be bad if your characters echoed while typing in a
password, for instance.
I've worked successfully with up to 300ms latency, but at that point
in my experience it becomes unpleasant when doing interactive work.

What's the latency of that link. You might get better response using
CDE over Gnome.
