[Craig, Otto, Bob, et al: I can't begin to express how much I appreciate your efforts in this mailing list, the blogs, wikis, Sun forums, etc. You guys are going above and beyond to make this technology a great success, so *please* recognize that the following rant is not pointed in your direction.]

Ruben, I understand your confusion.

There was *in fact* such an offering. For a (short) while, both SRSS and SGD were explicitly included in the "Solaris Enterprise System" which was "available at no cost for both development and deployment". That's a direct quote - see this:

   http://www.sun.com/aboutsun/media/presskits/nov30/faq.html

During that time, both SRSS and SGD appeared as selectable options on the SES download page. SRSS obviously doesn't have a license enforcement mechanism, but SGD does. So, there also appeared on that download page a note to send email to < [EMAIL PROTECTED]> for free licenses. I and a colleague in another department sent the email and got the free SGD license codes.

At this time, Sun was making a *lot* of marketing noise along the lines of "we're making all our software free to use -- pay only for support!". Then, suddenly, there was a silent pull-back from that position. SRSS and SGD disappeared from the SES download list and Sun started announcing promotional "deals" on SGD licenses.

IMHO, Sun pulled a bait and switch on this. Working in a perpetually funding-challenged public university, I rejoiced at the original SES announcements and then suffered bitter disappointment at the subsequent silent retraction.

Allow me to explain.

I'm really not sure if there was ever an offering that allowed use if support was declined. But, I can tell you that whenever a Sun Ray is purchased, the RTU to use that Sun Ray must also be purchased.

thanks

I am a bit confused about the SRSS RTU.
Is it a mandatory item when you buy a SunRay?
Some time ago, I ve read that if you don't whant support, you can use the software, but now it seems that you can not order a SunRay DTU if you don't buy a RTU. If that is the case (that EVERY SunRay MUST have a RTU)?
