Following on from Bob's suggestion I've installed gdm-2.16.1-36.4.src.rpm from the web. I'm at the stage of utinstall so don't have a /opt/SUNWut/lib/iu_modules/M08GDM yet to edit. Any ideas how I can proceed?

Sorry, but this is *not* what I suggested. It is highly unlikely that you'll be able to install forward versions of GDM on Linux, due to library dependencies.
This is why we don't simply ship GDM 2.16 with SRSS. In the case I think
you are referring to, somebody was trying to use RHEL 5 which already was
built with GDM 2.16, so they just wanted to use the native version and not
have SRSS's utinstall complain.

You raise an interesting point however regarding the ability for users to
edit M08GDM. That will be tricker than I had anticipated since utinstall
will try to install a new version of SUNWuti, which contains this file. You
might try installing SUNWuti from the CD image directly first, but I can't
guarantee that will have the desired effect... Sorry - it was a thought. As these
are unsupported platforms we don't have any experience with them.

In your case you're probably in luck, because plenty of other people have
gotten SRSS to work on SLES 10. RHAS 5 may be another story.
