Hi Michael,
Your price listing is a bit unbalanced. I would just list the delta,
which is the additional HW for running ESX and the SAN. Additional SW
licenses would be typically for ESX and maybe VC. XP licenses can in
many cases be assumed to be there, while on the TS side you definitely
need to add the TS costs itself.

Thanks for your reply. It seems to me that VDI is really nice and would
solve applications that did not work on TS but the cost at this time
does not outweigh the benefits. By the time you buy VMWare and VDI
licensing and the still have to purchase XP CAL's, your price is
outrageous. I have read some blogs that talk about running 80+ VDI on a
single server with 4FC port to a SAN and 128GM or ram. These are
definitely enterprises that have unlimited funding.
150 Users system
2 (Sun 4600's VMWare VDI) = 70k
1 (SAN) = 30k
150 (Sun Ray 270) = 90k
2 (Sun X2200 Sun Ray Server) = 24k
These prices doesn't even include licensing for VMWare, XP, Sun Ray and
Office which are probably another 50k. Even if you take the the SAN out
of the equation (most people already paid for it or have one of these),
your still close to the cost of a fat client.
Can someone give a good idea on what kind of hardware they are using to
reliably support 80 Terminal server users?
Thanks.

Hi Michael,
In brief:
One would choose Terminal Services, when:
* Applications run out of the box on TS
* You look for a mature solution, that has been proven x times over years
* Minimizing the HW costs is key
On the other a Virtual Desktop solution is getting interesting, when:
* Applications do not run on TS or qualification of applications is
too time consuming
* You have many misbehaving apps (they misbehave only in an isolated
VM as opposed to a whole TS server - less side effects on other users)
* You need more flexibility in desktop configuration
* You want more flexibility/control for users on their desktop
* Advantage of thin-client today, but more flexibility in long term
desktop strategy

When looking to deploy desktop replacements, why would you choose to
go with Terminal Server over VMWare desktop or vise versa? What
about hardware to desktop requirements for each solution, will one or
the other require more hardware on the backend?
Thanks for your advice.
