That's probably your best bet for getting an explanation. You
might point the Support people at CR 5103120 ("Front and
Open keys do not work on Sun type 6 keyboards.") which
was originally fixed for SPARC only in 2004, then reopened
in 2005 in order to be fixed on x86 too, then delivered as an
all-platforms fix in September 2006. But of course the fixes
are logged against internal project code names and build
numbers and I don't know how to correlate those against S10
updates. It might be that the fix for x86 is available only in
Nevada, in which case you could file a patch request to have
it made available in S10 too.
The other place to ask for information would be the
desktop-discuss mailing list on opensolaris.org. Many of the
Sun Gnome people are active there, including the guy who
delivered the all-platforms version of this fix.

Yes, understood. It's crazy that this was ever treated as a
SPARC-specific problem.
