I just wanted to wrap this up. We were unable to find the root cause for the problem, and my faculty were getting antsy about the lab being back up. I ended up building a new server and dropping that in place. The last theory is that something getting called by the utdtsession script was dying before dtsession could launch, thus preventing it. Normal means of detecting corrupted files didn't seem to be helpful, so the next step is probably a brute-force walk-through of the script, testing each app along the way. Now that everything in functional, this is not a huge priority for me, so I'll probably continue debugging at a later date.
Thanks to those who offered advice. Big thanks to Pete, my Sun tech, and the team in Munich that he's been talking to. Even though we didn't find an answer, he hung with me for four business days. I did learn some new tricks for Solaris, so it wasn't a total loss. If I do find out what actually broke, I'll post it here so others may learn.
