Ah, so it is the missing VTAllocation=falseline in your gdm.conf which prevents Xnewt from starting.(Without this line, gdm starts the X server with an additional argument in the command line. Xnewt does not understand this argument and exits immediately.)
I think that
DisallowTCP=false
was also pretty important.
