That's very interesting.  The only easy way I can see for this error
to occur is if the 'mkfifo' command succeeds but returns a non-zero
exit status (indicating failure) to the 'utconfig' script, but 'mkfifo' is
not a 'ksh' builtin and '/usr/bin/mkfifo' behaves correctly on all of the
Red Hat and SUSE systems I can find.

I wonder whether 'mkfifo' has become a shell builtin in the version of
'ksh' on this CentOS system.  Philippe or Christian, perhaps you could
run these commands in the CentOS 'ksh':

  rpm -q ksh
  builtin

It would also be interesting to know what the exit status of 'mkfifo' is
when it successfully creates a FIFO.
