This sort of thing can happen when a user accesses a machine with a
different version of Gnome using a shared home directory. Gnome just
isn't very friendly about version compatibility.
I recommend that the user:
- log out of all graphical desktop sessions
- log in somehow with a non-graphical session (e.g. ssh or login with a
"failsafe session" type)
- run gnome-cleanup
