Check /var/tmp for files/directories gconfd-username orbit-username and mapping-username. User "username" must be able to write to these files. The black screen shows up if those files are not writable by the user.

I produced this scenario by removing a user, then creating a new user with the same name but different UID (without cleaning up /var/tmp). Have the user log out and let the sysadmin get rid of the offending files.

I suspect a general write access failure to /var/tmp would show up similarly.
