Can you tell when the expected release of 4.2 will be?
Sept-Oct.
And is this new major release supposed to also have the long-term
missing Xrender functionality? We have certain situations here with our
Sunray environment where a proper support of XRender for the Linux would
definitly help. In addition we still have serve problem with
applications like Matlab or IDL which open windows with 3D components in
them and which cause the whole Xnewt process to end up in a seg fault.
That's also present now, in EA1.
But it's a software implementation of XRender on the server, so it's not
necessarily a panacea for all your XRender woes. It may help performance
a little if you're already utilizing a poorly-optimized XRender software
implementation (apparently one such ships with Gnome), or it may hurt
performance. It will depend on your application and runtime environment.
Have you filed bugs regarding your Xnewt seg faults? That should never
occur.
