Are there plans to make a hardware-accelerated version at all?

Although I can't speak about plans beyond 4.2 in an open forum, it's not something that fits a stateless thin client model well, and would require non-trivial changes to the architecture.

I should mention that in 4.2 the XRender implementation is turned *off* by default, and must be enabled via utxconfig.
