    Just to follow this up - yes, you were correct.

One thing that is different is this installation uses Motif screen lock
that actually says it is a Sun Ray session, whereas my other systems use
the standard OpenSolaris screen lock.. odd, must have done something
different.

You can influence this behavior through the use of the "-D" option to utpolicy. Default is to use the Sun Ray Remote Hotdesk Authentication (RHA) security feature, which presents the Motif out-of-session authentication screen. If you specify "-D" that disables RHA and you'll rely on the in-session standard OpenSolaris screen lock for security (which has a number of known vulnerabilities).
