I'm trying to install SRSS 4.2 on OpenSolaris/dev, build 126.
What build of 4.2 are you installing (what does pkginfo -x SUNWuta report?).
It can't be 4.2 because 4.2 isn't released yet, so it's EA2 or EA1 (or 4.1 :) ).
It's EA2. One thing that may be wrong. I downloaded RedHat version of
EA2 (to compare OpenSolaris and CentOS as SRSS servers). It ships both
Solaris packages and Linux rpm's. Maybe packages for Solaris and Linux
are different? However, if this is the case, why do we have both rpms
and System V packages in one archive?

We have a single CD image that installs on all platforms the appropriate RPMs or packages. The installer figures out what to install. No difference between Solaris and Linux CDs.

However , during configuration the following error is displayed by
utconfig:
Starting Sun Ray Data Store daemon .
Mon Nov 2 09:59 : utdsd starting
Adding user admin ...
Failed to add user(s) to the list
ERROR: Could not retrieve policy.
ERROR: Could not retrieve policy.
Do you get any interesting error messages in any of the /var/opt/SUNWut/log files or /var/adm/messages?
Yes... Something like that:
Nov 2 17:13:03 <host> utprop[3095]: [ID 702911 user.info]
open_connection(): Could not bind to DS server <host> - Can't connect to
the LDAP server

Where <host> is name of my SRSS server. This name is correctly resolved
to server's ip...

That means the SRDS daemon (utds) is not running.
Did you reboot after running utinstall as instructed?
