Hi, Well I dont see why this is desirable, from any other perspective than a demo environment. The advantage ofcourse is that you dont have to use any
other server or switch as the DCHP server.

In a Real Environment though , you almost always have a company wide DHCP service . And deploying the solaris DCHP as well will only be a pain in the neck. What we did was deploying a VLAN in the Cisco stack and a corresponding PortGroup in Vmware ESX where all the Virtual WinXP desktops are attached to the network. The DHCP server is the ISC DHCP server running on LINUX, where a DHCP scope is available for the VLAN. The VLAN is not isolated but reaches the company internet gateway through the CISCO stack and the firewalls .

The Sun ray Servers are also connected to the same VLAN with one I/F, and to the normal server VLAN with another I/F.

To have a Isolated Network for the virtual Windows desktops also isolates them form all the services the WinXP desktops need to use which is not what you want. It does however produce a neat demo environmnet.

*Hi all,*

Kindly advise me on this

I know that with vdi 2.0 we used to create a private network as I have quoted from a cookbook by /Dirk Grobler, November 2007 (Updated March 2008)/

The second virtual network is private to the VMware ESX server and is not connected to a physical network. It connects the Sun VDI Software with all the virtual desktops. The Sun VDI Software, or more specifically, the Sun Ray Server component, is configured as the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server for this private network. The VMware VirtualCenter is also connected to this private network. This network handles the virtual desktop lookup process on behalf of the user and the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) communication between the Sun VDI server and the virtual desktops.

Is this still done when deploying desktops with vdi 3.1

Any assistance will highly be appreciated.

Cheers

James
