Bob, I'm sorry it took so long to get back to you. I finally had a black screen to test what you suggested below. I was able to display a xterm screen on the blacked out DTU. I was also able to execute commands from that xterm window. On a non-blacked out DTU, I can display the xterm window, but I can't execute any commands (the window can't get the focus and there is no window manager running).
