Hi Magnus,
Thansk for the prompt reposnse... yeah, I had been bitten by that one!!
dpkg --list | grep gdm
ii gdm-2.20 2.20.10-0ubuntu3

22D points me towards something fundamental with the services (26D I think
would be the gdm config) - I'd be happier if it was gdm!! :o)

I get errors like:

 ./utpolicy
ERROR: Could not retrieve policy.

/utxconfig
Error: could not connect to admin server

and I just noticed when I run utconfig it has trouble:

Unique "/etc/opt/SUNWut/gmSignature" has been generated.

Restarting Sun Ray Data Store ...
Stopping Sun Ray Data Store daemon
Sun Ray Data Store daemon stopped
Starting Sun Ray Data Store daemon .
Sat Aug 21 11:58 : utdsd starting
Adding user admin ...
Failed to add user(s) to the list
ERROR: Could not retrieve policy.
ERROR: Could not retrieve policy.

Hmm...

Something simple I am sure, but just can't work out where to look - nothing
is logged to messages so no pointers.

Good blog post by the way, if I get to the bottom of this one I'd love to
upgrade my 9.10 clients to LTS - then get into that 18 month release cycle
(come on Oracle - must be worth some manpower for support?? even .deb in an
"unsupported" fashion ??).

Anyway, once again thanks for your assistence... now, back to that
terminal...
