A bit more info and some bad news. The old 280R has an XVR-100
graphics card installed as the console. If I run either of the test programs
in the /usr/openwin/demo/GL directory, they work. The GLX extension is
listed as available. However if I run the programs on an old SunRay 1G
connected to an old Sun LCD monitor (1280x1024, the same as connected
to the XVR-100 on the console), the ogl_install_check fails giving a black
screen and a new login screen. So apparently the current OpenGL with
patch doesn't work correctly with the older (but patched) version of SunRay
running on the old SPARC. Bummer as this ogl_install_check USED to
run on some older version of Solaris and SunRay (I don't remember which)
on this machine. Looks like an older version of SunRay:
