Unity is still running on X. They're just using a new fork.
That said Unity is a big disappointment to me - it is actually more
authoritarian than Aqua.. at least in Aqua you can move and resize the
dock... You can switch back to Gnome ("Ubuntu0 Classic"), but they didn't
include gnome3, so if you don't like Unity you are using the same build that
was in Ubuntu 10.4.
