The issue here is that the 3i does not have a hardware scaler. If you
change the resolution, you wind up with vertical bands the size of 1920
minus the new resolution width and horizontal bands the size of 1080
minus the new height. (I know it might seem that I got the horizontal
and vertical backwards, but it's correct if you think about it.
So if you try to set a resolution of 800x600, the screen will start at
x,y of 0,0 (upper left corner). The display is fixed, so after 800
pixels, you'll have black band to the right that is 1,120 pixels wide
and from the bottom will have a black band starting at pixel 601 that
will be 480 pixels high
A hardware scaler, like in the 270, would zoom/stretch the picture to
get rid of the black bands. The hardware scaler in the 270 was really
the result of it also being capable of being a stand-alone monitor.
That feature was dropped from the 3i, and with it went the hardware scaler.
It's unfortunate that this model of Sun Ray was sold to a customer that
had a requirement for 800x600. From a product team standpoint, we've
tried our best to address the fixed nature of the 3i display in the
product brief and hardware guide in hopes that situations like these
could be avoided. But there is obvious room for improvement.

Ben,
I assume you've done an X Display Reset [CTL ALT backspace backspace] along
with a reboot?
What I've done in the past is
utresadm -a -c IEEE802.MAC_addr -t pseudo.MAC_addr XRESxYRES@frequency
utresadm -a -c IEEE802.000000000000 -t pseudo. 000000000000 1024x768@60
You can check what settings have been made with utresadm -p
Then do a cold restart [utrestart -c].
You can access this from the thin client itself with Shift Props [using a Sun
keyboard], which will bring up a config menu. The drawback is that settings
changed with this method are not permanent.
I don't know about y'all but the 2 issues for me that behave inconsistently
from case to case are video resolution and firmware updating.
