did you have a look at /var/log/gdm/:DISPLAY.log?  Is your ksh the
correct one (as far as I remember, there had been a change in Debian's
default ksh once; we use 'ksh93').

Just as a kind of encouragement: Our sunray servers run SRS 5.2.1 on
Debian Linux Wheezy (7.0).  And even after updating the do run and allow
logins.
