I knew that going to Macworld Expo this year would pay off!
As you probably know, I've been having problems the last eight months
getting together my planned MIDI/audio studio put together when I ran into a
brick wall with a C600/Sonnet Crescendo G3 combo. I sold the C600 to a
co-worker and with the proceeds got ahold of a J700, stuffed in a Powerlogix
G3 350 card from a sale at Small Dog (and even overclocked it to 400 MHz) ,
upped my RAM to 128MB- and then had more problems with choppy playback with
the programs I was using (Logic Rocket, Cubasis AV, Pro Tools LE).
Then came Macworld - and at the Guitar Center booth, they were showing
off the new version of Cubasis, VST 2, which is like a stripped-down version
of Cubase VST/24. It can handle up to 48 audio tracks, 64 MIDI tracks, and
can also handle up to four VST instruments and a variety of VST effects
plug-ins. It also comes complete with TC Spark LE for doing final mastering
and CD burning.
I was so intigued with the program that I decided to get it (it retails
for $99 US, but GC was selling it at the show for $69 US). I figured, it's
make or break time - if the J700 chokes on this, it's time to go to the bank
and grovel for a loan for a G4 Tower :)
But lo and behold, it WORKS! And very well, I may add - playback from
the drive is flawless, and tonight, after some tweazing, I was able to do
some recording via the microphone in socket with my guitar, a sixteen-bar
blues looped, combined with some MIDI drums. I was even able to get one of
the VST instruments working to handle the cymbals!
It's going to be an interesting learning curve with this program, but
I'm already feeling confident enough that I'm going to be once again
producing music after about a seven-year layoff.
oh yeah, did I mention that this program actually comes with a fairly
thick manual (and a more up-to-date manual on the CD) and another CD with
600 MB of loops and sounds?
anyway, here's the system requirements:
Minimum
Power Mac 604e/200 MHz
128MB RAM
256K Second Level Cache
Mac OS 8.6 or later
Recommended
Power Mac G3/266 MHz
192MB RAM when using Internet fuctionality (Rocket)
Approved ASIO compliant sound card
