A better (and more understandable) explanation would be this:

At the moment (or before Dan made the post) the list software removes the
In-Reply-To line from the header, so if you get individual messages you can
only thread them (put them in folders automatically) by their subject.

Dan has changed it now so the In-Reply-To line is kept, and if your email
software understands it, it can use that to group messages together.

A bit like putting "Your Ref. 1234" on a letter to the bank, so they know
which letter it matches up with.
