Hello Bernie, welcome to the list. If you could try to delete as much as
possible of the other person's reply before you post your responses in a
thread that would be very helpful. Also posting replies after the quoted
text helps comprehension and readability.

Telnet is a way to open a command line interface on a remote computer,
usually running a form of Unix. When you have logged it to the machine using
telnet it works as if you were operating it directly. Most Mac users don't
need to know about Telnet (or SSH, the more secure version) as it is beyond
what they need to do.

To log into a POP email server using telnet, you can follow these
instructions: <http://www.uklinux.net/support/#mailproblems>

It is a little unfriendly but works very well. Check with your ISP or email
hosting provider that they don't mind you doing this, as apparently some can
get quite upset.
