Not quite the advice you're looking for, but some that might be useful:

Anywhere you or your friend is thinking of pulling one cable, pull
two or even four. You always end up needing more cable. Cable is
cheap compared to the effort to install it and it is just as much
effort to pull one cable strand as it is to pull two or four or even
eight.

You don't have to terminate the extra cables (the connectors are the
real cost) you can just leave the loose ends behind the wall plates
for later use, but having that extra cable in place will pay off in
the long run.

Places in my house where I put four jacks on a wall plate are already
using three of the four jacks in some cases. On the other hand, I
ran cat. 5 everywhere but I run both the home network and the
telephone lines on the system. So where three jacks are used, some
are used for network and some for telephone.

The nice thing about putting the phone lines on the cabling is that I
can change the locations of extensions or add extensions just by
moving a patch cord in the wiring closet. RJ11 plugs workin RJ45
jacks just fine.

I too am interested in the answer to your original question. I ran
Cat. 5 and RG-6 about four years ago before the new stuff was really
on the radar.
